Clay Guillory Makes 3D-Printed Prosthetic Hands
Diversified Machine Systems Mechanical Engineer, Clay Guillory has gotten some attention for something pretty amazing. During the day, Clay designs and engineers new 3 & 5 axis CNC routers for DMS and subsidiary brand, Freedom Machine Tool. But at night, he’s become known as someone who can build a Cyborg Beast in a week. Channel 5 KOAA featured his story in the above video (video credit: KOAA.com). Clay not only helps build CNC routers, but he’s built his own 3D printers to make really cool things for whatever he could need at home, but also, for kids who were born with hand or arm deformities. In the story, Clay was found through a Craigslist posting and together, they connected with E-nabling the Future, an organization that matches up kids in need of prosthetics with the makers who can build them for them. This non-profit organization gets all the details for the 3D printed prosthetic and helps the process go smoothly. Below in the gallery, you’ll see that the The Cyborg Beast seems to be the leading favorite among kids, maybe because it looks like a hand from Transformers. The hands can be any color of their choosing and takes about 30 hours or about a week of dedicated time when the project arises. Because of the relationship with E-nabling the Future, he can help kids all over the country – the last being from New Jersey. “E-nabling the Future has told me about another possible match coming up with a kid in Denver who would need a prosthetic that would work from her arm above her elbow,” explains Clay. “That would be especially exciting to be able to make for someone because it takes even more advanced robotics to give them that freedom. I do this as a volunteer thing, and hope more engineers and 3D printing makers get involved.” Clay has been with DMS for almost two years and got into 3D printing about a year ago.
